Mayor Mike Rawlings has announced the official expansion of Dallas Arts Week into Dallas Arts Month, as of April. The celebration will continue to build awareness and appreciation for the cultural renaissance happening right in the heart of our city. The decision to expand from a mere seven days to a vast thirty, stemmed from the community—we wanted more creatively driven endeavors and we got it.

“There is so much going on artistically in Dallas, and we see all types of art being

created and experienced in every corner of the city: theatre, music, dance, sculpture,

literature, painting and more. We realized we needed much more than a week to do it all

justice. So for the 30 days of April, it’s all about the arts!”— Mayor Mike Rawlings

It all begins April 1, when Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the nation’s leading modern dance company, infuses energy and emotion into classic and new performances alike. Likewise, several local galleries will host opening receptions to kick off Dallas Arts Month!

Spread throughout the month of April, there are also events such as the Nissan Nightlife Concert Series, held in Klyde Warren Park every Thursday; and of course, there's the ongoing exhibition of renowned Mexican contemporary art at the Dallas Museum of Art—a show well on its way to breaking attendance records.

Other must-see events include the Dallas Art Fair and the Deep Ellum Arts Festival, both taking place April 7-9. Two weeks later, following these massive events, is the Dallas Art Dealers Association Spring Gallery Walk. Art lovers of every description will have the opportunity to social and explore a full spectrum of galleries and exhibitions throughout the Dallas area.

Rounding off the end of Dallas Arts Month is the Nasher’s own Ultra-seeing Film Series. This exploration of experimental cinema from the perspective of synesthesia, visual music, and visualization of music, is sure to be the perfect end to an amazing art-filled month!

Here’s a list of some other noteworthy events:

  • Dallas Black Dance Theatre presents DBDT: Encore!—Rising Excellence, April 7-8 at the AT&T Performing Arts Center
  • Creative Conversation: Art, Architecture and Placemaking, April 10 at Dallas City Performance Hall
  • DeColonize Dallas Opening Reception, April 11, 6 – 8 p.m. at Nasher Sculpture Center
  • Three free, outdoor performances of BANDALOOP, the vertical dance company which will perform off the side of a downtown office tower. Presented by Dallas Arts District, TITAS Presents and AT&T Performing Arts Center, April 22 in the Dallas Arts District

With so much to admire in the Arts District and around Dallas, we’re lucky to be located in the heart of the cultural hub.
